To find if there are molecules of out interest in the sample is, with today's technology, easy to do.On the beginning of the video you can see automated device which "prints" molecules of interested as spots on slides. A single type of protein which has been tagged with a fluorescent marker can then be washed across the array. Any small molecule that binds to the protein can be detected by scanning for spots that are fluorescent.
