The cell membrane is a translucent pliable skin which controls the flow of materials into and out of the cell. It is composed of a double layer of fat molecules sandwiched between two layers of protein molecules. The exact molecular structure of the cell membrane is still unknown, but this diagrammatic model shows what is thought to be the relationship of carbohydrates with protein, water and fat molecules.
