Ovarian hormones whether by genomic or nongenomic mechanisms have a prominent effect on the serotonergic, noradrenergic, glutamatergic, GABAergic, and opiatergic systems.[30-33] These neurotransmitter systems have been postulated to play a significant role in the pathophysiology of migraine headache.[1,34] Therefore, in the section below we will review studies detailing the influence of ovarian hormones on specific neurotransmitter systems relevant to the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Research conducted on nonhuman primates and humans will be emphasized when available
