Local anesthetics such as lidocaine rapid onset lasting less than 1 hour or bupivacaine slower onset but lasting 4 to 6 hours are typically used when performed appropriately the benefit to the patient is significant and the risk for complication from the procedure or systemic toxicity of the local anesthetic is small
