Chemical cells use two different metals immersed in an electrolyte, which either an acid or base. The acid or base reacts with the metals. Because the two metals immersed in the electrolyte, there is transfer of ions carrying different amount of charge. This creates a voltage difference which is the basis of pushing an electric charge through the wire. Edited by Ashraf
