Prion disease in cows, known as BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), can be transmitted from cows to humans if areas of highly concentrated prions, such as the cow's brain or inner part of the eye, come into contact with the meat of the cow that humans eat. Michael Geschwind, MD PhD, of UCSF's Memory and Aging Center explains the very rare cicumstances in which this may happen.
