HYDROCHLORIC ACID from SALT

Some salt is poured into a distil flask, then consentrated sulfuric acid is added. This produces hydrogen chloride gas, the gas is bubbled through water to form hydrochloric acid. To test to make sure that it is hydrochloric acid ammonium hydroxide is exposed to the HCl to form white smoke of ammonium chloride. Alchemists used sulfuric acid to make HCl and nitric acid way back in the 1500's
